Anthony M. Bloch is the Alexander Ziwet Collegiate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan where he has served as graduate and department chair. He received a B.Sc.(Hons) in Applied Mathematics and Physics from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in 1978, an M. S.in Physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1979, an M. Phil in Control Theory and Operations Research from Cambridge University in1981 and a Ph. D in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University in 1985.  His main research interests are in nonlinear dynamics, mechanics, and control. He has received various awards including a Presidential Young Investigator Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Simons Fellowship. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society,  the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.  He was a Senior Fellow of the Michigan Society of Fellows and a member of the Institute for Advanced Study.  He was Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Journal of Control and Optimization and is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nonlinear Science as well as a Series Editor for Springer Publishing.

Fields of Scholarship and Research Interests

Ph.D in Applied Mathematics, Harvard University


Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics, symplectic geometry, total positivity, stability, nonholonomic systems (the motion of mechanical systems with nonintegrable constraints), the relationship between continuous and discrete flows, nonlinear control and optimal control. Anthony Bloch also studies various other other topics in geometric mechanics and nonlinear dynamics including quantum dynamics and control.
