Fields of Scholarship and Research Interests

Professor Erol Gelenbe is a pioneering researcher in Computer Systems and Networks. Using Markovian and semi-Markov methods, he obtained seminal analytical results regarding the page fault rates in large classes of memory management algorithms and derived the stability and optimal control of the ALOHA communication system. He computed the exact load-dependent optimal values of checkpoints for databases and the average computational complexity of relational database operations. He invented new modelling and analysis methods, including G-Network queueing system models. His team developed the QNAP series of commercial computer and network performance evaluation tools. He invented the spiking random neural network and its deep learning, auto-associative and reinforcement algorithms. His technological contributions include a patented optimal architecture for many-to-many communications, patented reinforcement learning routing for edge networks and the Internet, patented tumour identification from Brain MRI scans, and the industrial simulation tool Flexsim. He currently investigates real-time cyberattack detection with AI and develops task allocation algorithms that optimize the sustainability of computer systems and networks.
