Fields of Scholarship and Research Interests
György Buzsáki is a systems neuroscientist known for his two-stage model of memory consolidation, discovery of internally generated cell assemblies that support cognition, neural syntax and brain rhythms and his innovative techniques in neuroscience.
Professor György Buzsáki is a leading scientist in systems neuroscience, best known for uncovering how neuronal population activity is organized in time to support cognition. His research centers on the idea of a “neural syntax”—the hypothesis that brain function is governed not only by responses to external stimuli but also by internally generated, rule-like temporal structures created by brain rhythms. A major focus of his work is the hippocampo–cortical network, where he has helped establish how oscillations such as theta and gamma rhythms, and sleep-related sharp wave–ripples, coordinate cell assemblies and sequence activity that underlies learning, memory, and navigation. He is particularly associated with the two-stage model of memory consolidation, emphasizing how post-learning reactivation during sleep—often linked to sharp wave–ripple events—supports long-term memory stabilization. Across these contributions, Buzsáki’s work has provided a unifying framework for understanding how oscillations, synchrony, and cross-frequency coupling shape information processing in both healthy brains and neurological disorders.
