Fields of Scholarship and Research Interests

Doctor of Economics ("Theoretical and methodological problems of the institutional transformations in the oil and gas sector of the Russian economy")

Prof. Valeriy A. Kryukov’s professional activity mainly focuses on the sustainable development of resource-based economies – i.e., economies and societies that rely on the exploitation of various natural resources (mineral and biological) as their main source of income.

He is the author of groundbreaking work in Russia dedicated to theoretical aspects of the trajectories of development of oil and gas activities – by companies and regions. Big emphasis is given not only to the regional trajectories of natural resources development, but also to the specific features that are determined by the influence of socio-economic systems, whether market based or based on the proactive role of the state. Theoretical foundations of Prof. Kryukov’s approach are rooted in the neo-institutional paradigm. As a result, he has concluded that trajectories of the resource-based economies are determined not only by the issues of technological and property rights, but also by the systemic features of assets determined by the leading model of coordination of economic processes in a certain country in a certain period of time. The main criteria of comparison between different systems is the increase of social value coming out of the usage of resources and their later utilization in various sectors of the national economy. Among the main directions and results of Prof. Valeriy Kryukov’s research is the interconnection between the elaborated approach and environmentally, socially and economically sustainable development of resource-based regions.

His advanced theoretical vision has allowed Prof. Kryukov to develop and implement the approach of measuring and forecasting of socio-economic dynamics in resource-based regions (predominantly of the Russian East and Arctic). This approach has also been applied for the analysis of various trajectories of the development of separate subregions of Russia.
