Professor Yury Sargsyan, an outstanding scientist in the field of mechanics, theory of mechanisms, and robotics, a prominent organizer of science and higher education, an Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, and a Fellow of the Core Academy, passed away.
Yury Sargsyan was born on February 9, 1941 in Yerevan. In 1962 he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Yerevan Polytechnic Institute. In 1964 he was admitted to the postgraduate course at the Moscow Institute of Chemical Technology, specializing in the theory of mechanisms, machines and automatic lines. In 1967, he defended his Candidate's thesis, in 1975. - He was awarded the title of professor two years later. From 1971-1972 he did a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University, and from 1977-78 he was a visiting professor at Stanford and Illinois universities.
Yury Sargsyan began his career at Yerevan Polytechnic Institute as an assistant, and then went through a brilliant path: Associate Professor, Professor, Head of Department, and in 1988 was elected Rector of the Polytechnic Institute (now the National Polytechnic University of Armenia), remaining at the helm of the University until 2006. He was destined to become the initiator and ideologist of the structural and programmatic radical reform of higher education in Armenia, which aimed to bring the system of higher education closer to international standards and make it adaptable to the changing needs and demands of the market economy society.
Under the direct leadership of Yury Sargsyan, the Polytechnic was reorganized into the State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA) in 1992 and was the first in the CIS countries to switch to a three-year system of higher education. Yury Sargsyan also made a significant contribution to the founding of the American University of Armenia and Artsakh State University. For many years, he was a member of the Boards of Trustees of the National Polytechnic University of Armenia (former State Engineering University of Armenia) and the American University of Armenia.
Yury Sargsyan is the author of internationally recognized monographs and numerous scientific articles on the theory of mechanism synthesis and computer-aided design, the theory of spatial mechanisms, mechanics of robotic systems, and the creation of new types of mechanisms, robots, and automated complexes. The results of the research were reported at the II-X World Conferences on the theory of mechanisms and machines, at the conferences of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Yury Sargsyan founded a fundamentally new direction in the theory of mechanism synthesis - approximation of kinematic geometry, which has received wide international recognition. The theoretical foundations of this direction are presented in the author's monograph “Approximation Synthesis of Mechanisms” (M., Nauka, 1982), and the methodology of approximation synthesis of mechanisms were created by him based on a new theoretical apparatus and universal algorithmic methods in the book “Kinematics, Dynamics, and Accuracy of Mechanisms”.
Yuri Sargsyan was elected a corresponding member of NAS RA in 1986 and a full member (academician) in 1996. From 1989-2006 he was a member of the Presidium of NAS RA. In 1994 he was elected Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. He was also active in scientific and social activities. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Theory of Mechanisms and Machines (IFToMM). He was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation for Theory of Mechanisms and Machines (IFToMM), and in 1998 was the President of the Armenian member organization of this federation. He was elected a corresponding member of the International Academy of Engineering in 1994 and a full member in 1995. He was a member of the editorial boards of a number of scientific journals in the Republic of Armenia and abroad and editor-in-chief of the “Banber” journal of the Armenian Academy of Sciences. In 1995 he was chairman of the professional council of “Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Sciences”.
In 2008 he was awarded the title of Honorary Professor of the State Engineering University of Armenia; in 2011 he was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of the Republic of Armenia. Professor Yury Sargsyan was also one of the first Armenian scholars to be elected a Fellow of the Core Academy.
The Core Academy mourns together with Prof. Yury Sargsyan's friends, students, and relatives.
