The Academic Committee is a vital component of the Academy’s organizational structure, responsible for overseeing and advising on academic affairs and providing strategic guidance for the Academy’s future development. It plays a central role in upholding academic standards, nominating and electing fellowship candidates, and guiding the strategic direction of research across the Academy and its affiliated institutions. Experts with distinguished achievements and reputations in the related fields are invited to join as members of the Academic Committee.

"A Member of the Academic Committee of the CORE Academy is a leading scholar with distinguished achievements and a high reputation in relevant fields, who serves as a strategic advisor on fellowship nominations and elections, provides guidance on scientific and academic development, and upholds the Academy’s highest scholarly standards."

Professor Kryukov is a Fellow of the CORE Academy in the Division of Social Sciences (elected 2023). He currently serves as Director and Chief Researcher at the Institute of Economics and Industrial Engineering, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS), where he also heads the Center for Resource Economics. He is a Full Member (Academician) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a Member of the Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research, and a Professor at both Novosibirsk State University and the Higher School of Economics in Moscow.

Over the past decades, Professor Kryukov has emerged as a significant scholar in the economics of natural resources and regional development. He was among the first in Russia to integrate evolutionary economics with institutional analysis in studying the resource sector. His scholarly work has illuminated how institutional transformation, rent distribution, and spatial development shape the long-term sustainability of resource economies, particularly in Russia’s Arctic and Siberian regions.

He has authored and co-authored over 940 publications, including 54 monographs. His research has appeared in a range of international journals, as well as in edited volumes published by academic presses such as Oxford University Press (The Oxford Handbook of the Russian Economy), Palgrave, Routledge, and Springer. Among his principal works are Oil and Gas Resources in a Transforming EconomyНефтегазовые ресурсы в трансформирующейся экономике: о соотношении реализованной и потенциальной социальной ценности недр») and Russia’s Oil and Gas Sector: The Difficult Path to Diversity («Нефтегазовый сектор России: трудный путь к диверсификации»), which are widely recognized in international academic and policy discussions related to Arctic development and resource governance.

Professor Kryukov’s academic career is complemented by an active role in international cooperation and policy engagement. He has contributed to expert groups and policy initiatives for organizations such as the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Arctic Council, and various regional governments in the Russian Federation. His research has informed strategies in areas such as sustainable development, energy policy, and institutional reform. He was elected a member of the Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research in 2015 and has collaborated extensively with institutions in Canada, Norway, the United States, Germany, China, and beyond. His interdisciplinary work across borders has supported global academic dialogue on energy, regional development, and Arctic policy. This sustained international engagement exemplifies the kind of scholarly cooperation that fulfills the CORE Academy’s mission.

Professor Kryukov’s appointment to the Academic Committee reflects not only his distinguished academic record but also his enduring commitment to advancing knowledge and addressing global challenges in resource economics and regional policy. We extend our sincere congratulations and a warm welcome to Professor Kryukov. We look forward to the insight, collaboration, and thoughtful leadership he—and his fellow Committee members—will bring to the CORE Academy, as we continue to pursue our mission: to foster excellence in scholarship across disciplines and regions, to promote the free and responsible development of knowledge, and to serve the public good through international academic cooperation.
