We are pleased to announce that Professor Andrzej Skowron, a distinguished computer scientist in intelligent systems, rough set theory, and data-centric computing, has been formally appointed as a Member of the Academic Committee of the CORE Academy.
The Academic Committee is a vital component of the Academy’s organizational structure, responsible for overseeing and advising on academic affairs and providing strategic guidance for the Academy’s future development. It plays a central role in upholding academic standards, nominating and electing fellowship candidates, and guiding the strategic direction of research across the Academy and its affiliated institutions. Experts with distinguished achievements and reputations in the related fields are invited to join as members of the Academic Committee.

Professor Skowron is a Fellow of the CORE Academy in the Division of Mathematics and Information Sciences. He is currently a Full Professor at the Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences and holds the title of Professor Emeritus at the University of Warsaw, where he previously served as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Mechanics.
He has authored or co-authored over 400 scientific publications, including foundational work in rough set theory, granular computing, and adaptive decision-making systems. His co-development of rough mereology and interaction-based computing has opened new avenues for research in knowledge discovery, soft computing, and autonomous reasoning under uncertainty. These conceptual frameworks have found application in diverse domains—from intelligent agents to machine learning and computational logic. Some of his pioneering research contributions include: (1) the rough set foundations for intelligent systems design (for example, methods based on the combination of rough sets with Boolean reasoning, and generalizations of approximation spaces based on advanced reasoning); (2) the interactive granular computing model as a basis for the synthesis and analysis of intelligent systems dealing with complex phenomena; and (3) AI foundations grounded in rough set theory.

In addition to his scientific contributions, Professor Skowron has played an active role in shaping the global research community in the field of Information Sciences. He is a Founding Fellow of the Web Intelligence Academy, a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI), and a Fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA). From 1996 to 2000, he served as President of the International Rough Set Society (IRSS) and has continued to serve on its advisory and steering boards. He is also a Fellow of the IRSS and the recipient of its Life Contribution Award (2013). His nomination by the University of Warsaw and the Polish Academy of Sciences for the Premier Award in 2009 recognized the lasting impact of his contributions to computing and logic. He was elected a Member of the European Academy of Sciences in 2019 and of Academia Europaea in 2023.
Professor Skowron has held editorial roles for numerous leading international journals, including Fundamenta Informaticae (Honorary Editor), Computational Intelligence, Natural Computing, Theoretical Computer Science, Group Decision and Negotiation, Granular Computing, and the International Journal of General Systems. He also serves on the advisory board of the International Web Intelligence Consortium. His academic influence spans Europe, North America, and Asia, marked by keynote lectures, conference leadership, and cross-border collaborative projects.
For decades, Professor Skowron has made sustained and meaningful contributions to the development of the information society. His election and appointment to the Academic Committee reflect not only his profound academic achievements but also his longstanding dedication to advancing interdisciplinary and international scholarship.
