We are pleased to share the exciting news that Professor Jonathan Coleman, a Fellow of the CORE Academy, has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society as part of its 2025 class. (Exceptional scientists elected as Fellows of the Royal Society)

Professor Coleman is a Fellow of the International Core Academy of Sciences and Humanities in the Division of Natural Sciences. He currently serves as the Erasmus Smith’s Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Head of the School of Physics at Trinity College Dublin. He is also a Principal Investigator at the AMBER Research Centre, Trinity College Dublin.
A leading physicist and nanomaterials scientist, Professor Coleman is renowned for his pioneering research on the solution processing of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, and their assembly into functional films and composites. These nanomaterial networks exhibit unique electrical and mechanical properties, enabling a wide array of technological applications.
The cornerstone of Professor Coleman’s scientific contribution is the development of Liquid Phase Exfoliation, a groundbreaking technique for producing 2D nanomaterials—such as graphene—from layered solids like graphite. He has since expanded this approach to synthesize a broad range of 2D materials, including MoS₂, GaS, Co(OH)₂, and even 2D talc (Mg₃Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂). His research has further advanced the integration of these materials into conductive and mechanically robust networks, with applications spanning energy storage, sensing, and printed electronics. While primarily an experimentalist, Professor Coleman’s work is marked by the development of intuitive theoretical models that elucidate the fundamental physics governing nanomaterial behavior.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to science, Professor Coleman has received numerous honors, including the Royal Irish Academy Gold Medal (2023), the Tabor Medal from the Institute of Physics (2022), and the ACS Nano Lectureship Award (2018).
