The unprecedented speed and scale of progress in artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years suggest that society may be living through a historic inflection point. With the growing availability of large datasets, new algorithmic techniques, and increased computing power, AI is becoming an established tool across scientific disciplines, enabling researchers to pursue novel solutions to longstanding problems. Now more than ever, it is crucial to understand the transformative impact of AI on science and what scientific communities must do to fully harness its benefits.
This report, Science in the Age of AI (PDF), examines how AI technologies—such as deep learning and large language models—are reshaping both the nature and the methods of scientific inquiry. It also considers how concepts of research integrity, research skills, and research ethics are inevitably evolving, and what these changes mean for the future of science and scientists.
The report addresses three central questions:
How are AI-driven technologies transforming the methods and nature of scientific research?
What opportunities, limitations, and risks do these technologies present for scientific research?
How can stakeholders—including governments, universities, industry, and research funders—best support the development, adoption, and responsible use of AI-driven technologies in science?
